golfhistory

While we pride our self in being on the cutting edge of golf, we are also proud of our rich golf history. Founded as North Hills Country Club in 1922 by a men of keen vision and foresight, we were the first of our kind in the area with plans for not just the standard 18-holes, but for forty-five greens for members to enjoy. Our founders selected none other than Wayne Stiles from Boston as the club's course architect. Mr. Stiles' design has been modified and maintained to the current championship quality members enjoy today by our outstanding grounds crew. Throughout the years, outstanding golfers have selected Norwood when searching for a course where their skills could be honed and their competitive spirit refined. It is a combination of family, competition and vision that has and will continue to serve Norwood and it's membership well for the years to come. These same traits exist in our membership today and will surely be the same characteristics found in generations to follow.

East Course

The East Course at Norwood Hills has remained relatively unchanged since its inception in 1922, giving it a very classic feel that is unrivaled in the Midwest.

The Greens are artfully sculpted making them some of the most interesting in St. Louis. Although shorter than the West Course, the yardage is deceiving. The Course plays to Par 69 over varied terrain coupled with undulating greens, making this a true shot-maker's course and a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Hole #1

Par 4 | Handicap M:17 W:11
  • 335
  • 314
  • 279
  • 279
  • 253

The ideal tee shot on this short opening Par 4 should be up the left center. Longer hitters will have a short pitch to the green. Any tee shots that don’t reach the top of the hill will leave a blind second shot. A relatively flat green with bunkers short left and a chipping area to the right.

West Course

The West Course, which opened in 1922, was designed by Wayne Stiles (1884-1953).  Born in Massachusetts, and a top amateur golfer, Styles designed or re-designed some 120 courses, from Maine to Florida.

Hole #1

Par 4 | Handicap M:11 W:13
  • 384
  • 384
  • 367
  • 334
  • 334
  • 325

The opening hole on the West Course requires an accurate tee shot due to strategically located fairway bunkers. Approach shots need to be played past the hole to leave an uphill putt. Green is sloped from front to back. A very fair opening hole on a golf course that gets progressively more difficult.
